Where to Stay: Louisville vs. Bardstown

Planning a trip to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make has nothing to do with distilleries.

👉 It’s where you stay.

Most people choose between Louisville and Bardstown, and they offer two completely different experiences (although they are only about 1 hour from one another).

After visiting 20+ distilleries, here’s how to think about it.

Staying in Louisville

Louisville is the most common place people stay, especially for first-time visitors.

It’s a bigger city, and that comes with some clear advantages:

  • More hotel options at every price point

  • Better restaurant scene

  • Bars and nightlife

  • Easy airport access

Most people stay in areas like downtown (on Whiskey Row) or NuLu, where you can walk to restaurants and bars after a day on the trail.

Louisville also puts you closer to distilleries like Angel’s Envy, Old Forester, and Michter’s.

👉 If you want flexibility and things to do outside of bourbon, Louisville is a strong choice.

Staying in Bardstown

Bardstown is a completely different experience.

This is where the Bourbon Trail really comes to life.

  • Closer to many major distilleries

  • Slower pace

  • More bourbon-focused atmosphere

You’re not staying here for nightlife.
You’re staying here for the experience.

I’ve personally stayed in Bardstown, and there are two places I’d confidently recommend:

  • The Trail Hotel - great location, easy access to distilleries and downtown Bardstown (<10 minutes away)

  • The Homestead at Log Still Distillery - quieter option, stay right on the property of Log Still Distillery

Both made the experience easier and more enjoyable, especially with how close you are to multiple distilleries.

👉 The biggest advantage is proximity. You spend less time driving and more time actually enjoying your trip.

The Real Difference

If you simplify it:

Louisville = convenience and variety
Bardstown = immersion and proximity

Neither is wrong. It just depends on what kind of trip you want.

My Honest Recommendation After 20+ Stops

If it’s your first trip, Louisville is probably the better option.

  • More flexibility

  • Easier logistics

  • More to do at night

If your goal is to fully experience the Bourbon Trail, Bardstown is hard to beat.

  • Less driving

  • More focused experience

  • Feels more like a true bourbon trip

👉 If you have the time, the best move is splitting your stay between both.

Final Thought

Most people don’t think enough about where they stay.

But it impacts everything:

  • How much you drive

  • How rushed your days feel

  • How much you actually enjoy the experience

Pick your home base carefully. It makes a bigger difference than you think.
